What Is a Chemical Pregnancy?

A chemical pregnancy is a very early pregnancy loss, often before most people even know they were pregnant. Here's what it means and what it doesn't.

A chemical pregnancy is a pregnancy that ends very shortly after implantation — typically before 5 weeks, and often before any symptoms develop. It's called "chemical" because the only evidence is a positive pregnancy test; nothing is visible on ultrasound.

Why chemical pregnancies happen

Most chemical pregnancies are caused by chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo. The fertilized egg implants and briefly produces HCG — enough to trigger a positive test — but the chromosomal issue prevents the pregnancy from developing further. This is not caused by anything you did or didn't do.

What it feels like

Many people experience a chemical pregnancy as a late or slightly heavier period. If they weren't testing early, they'd never know. For those who tested early and saw a positive, the experience can be emotionally significant even if physically it resembles a normal period.

How common they are

Chemical pregnancies are estimated to account for 50 to 75 percent of all miscarriages. They're more commonly detected now because home pregnancy tests are sensitive enough to catch HCG levels that would have been undetectable a generation ago.

What it means for future cycles

A chemical pregnancy is not a sign of infertility. Most people who experience one go on to have healthy pregnancies. Even two or three in a row doesn't necessarily indicate a problem — though recurrent loss does warrant evaluation.

The bottom line

A chemical pregnancy is an early loss, not a failed pregnancy in the clinical sense. It's common, usually chromosomal in cause, and in most cases doesn't affect your chances of conceiving in future cycles.
