Pregnancy Test Negative Then Positive: What Happened?
Getting a negative followed by a positive isn't a malfunction — it's usually just HCG catching up to your test's detection threshold.

A negative pregnancy test followed by a positive a day or two later is more common than most people expect, and it usually has a straightforward explanation.
Why the first test was negative
Home pregnancy tests detect HCG above a specific threshold — typically 10 to 25 mIU/mL depending on the brand. In early pregnancy, HCG starts very low and doubles every 48 hours. If you tested before your HCG crossed that threshold, the test correctly read negative — there just wasn't enough hormone to detect yet.
Why the second test was positive
By the time you tested again, HCG had risen enough to exceed the test's sensitivity threshold. This is expected, not a sign that something changed between tests. The pregnancy was there both times — the first test simply couldn't see it yet.
What timing has to do with it
- Testing before 10 DPO makes a false negative likely even in a healthy pregnancy.
- Testing with diluted urine (not first morning urine) can push a borderline result to negative.
- Using a less sensitive test first and a more sensitive test second will produce this pattern even on the same day.
Is this a sign of a problem?
Not on its own. A progression from negative to positive as HCG rises is exactly what's expected. The concern would be the reverse — a positive that fades back to negative — which can indicate a chemical pregnancy.
The bottom line
Negative then positive almost always means you tested slightly too early the first time. HCG simply hadn't reached a detectable level yet. A positive that holds and gets stronger is a reassuring sign.
